Yes, I know I haven't written anything in this journal for months (though you may have noticed me lurking around, occasionally; yes, I do read my friends' list, even though I'm not very sociable. ;P)

Anyways, this is my entry for the [livejournal.com profile] fe_contest "Game Mechanics" prompt... In theory. I was happily finishing it up... Until I noticed the word limit.

Cue me swearing and frantically trying to cut it down. (It stood at about 1200 words before I was finished; then I got it down to 1040, and I still hadn't finished it. XP) Apparently I suck at cutting down my writing, even though I know it's wordier than it could be.

Regardless, I'm posting the current version here... I'm going to continue my attempt to cut it down and make it eligible for FE Contest (hopefully before the deadline tomorrow).

BTW, it's another Lute and Artur piece. ;) Game mechanic used should be pretty obvious, from the title.

EDIT 07/18/11: Posting the original draft here, not the 1000 word version I edited for FE Contest (I had to cut out some lines I liked for that ;).

This is for the Mary Sue challenge 'fic at [livejournal.com profile] fe_contest. (Posting it here first because I'm worried some canon details are off, although I looked up as much as I could; hopefully someone will catch anything wrong before I post it for real.)

Anyways, this is an FE7 Tactician Sue 'fic with a twist (I hope). Oh, and I think this is the first FE7 'fic I've written with all three lords as somewhat major characters, as well as with the main villain, Nergal.

I'm not sure I'm happy with how this starts out, but it is somewhat fitting with the rest of the story. (Then again, I tend to not be very happy with my writing these days. ;P)

I just noticed today's date was the birthday of one of my favourite figure skaters (obsessive much?), so I decided to see if I could find anything on the web on him. Lo and behold, I find a post on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_skating dedicated to him! (And even though it's on a ONYD comm, the post is pretty straightforward, with many, many pics, videos and info. <3)

The reason why I am a (Russian) figure skating fangirl for life: Alexei Urmanov

I'm pretty sure the costume pictured at the beginning of the post is the reason why he caught my eye in the first place... Real men can wear sequins, dammit! (And ruffles... And gloves. ;)

BTW, is it wrong that the protagonist for the original story I was going to do for Nano is inspired by him? Or is it just plain creepy? XP

In other news, I really should be writing at the moment, but I feel no inspiration; it's very frustrating. :/ I keep on starting to write stuff, but am unable to finish... And I also want to draw, but I'm not happy with my drawings either (I tend to only draw tiny thumbnails while I experiment with costuming, sigh)...

Oh good, the due date for the latest FE Contest challenge is up! I actually have the first draft of my Mary Sue 'fic done, but it still needs to be edited... However, I'm really tempted to post it ASAP, if only because I'm somewhat paranoid that someone will post a similar idea. XP

The other reason I'd like to post it early is because I'm worried about some canon details that I've tried to look up, but can't quite find what I need... The only reason I haven't asked anyone about it is because it would spoil the plot of the story; I'd much rather post it up here first, and see if anyone catches something off about it. (BTW, my story is about a FE7 Tactician Sue, hence my worries that someone will write something similar. ;P)

BTW, I'm actually not doing Nano right now, even though I really want to work on my original story idea... I've decided instead to attempt to finish some of the stories in my WiP pile. I was actually pretty good about writing every day until this weekend, when I had to stop due to visiting an out-of-town friend, then I kind of fell off the wagon. :P (Also, I'm still working on the Mary Sue 'fic, so I'm sort of invested in that, ATM...)

Oh, I do have to mention that when I visited said friend this weekend, we went to see the play, "Rock of Ages"; it's basically a musical set to 80's rock music. (In some respects, it reminds me of wayne's World; the main character even sounded like Garth at times, at least at this staging.)

Finished my entry for the "Terror" prompt at [livejournal.com profile] fe_contest. It's pretty much a retelling of Ward and Lot's B supports with Echidna. (Not sure what inspired me to write about those two, out of the FE6 cast; well, I have written about Lot before, but still...)

I was trying to keep this short, so it turned out way shorter than I expected; it's only about 300 words. :/ Oh, and my other title for this story is, "Why did it have to be...?"

I'm not sure why, but all of a sudden, I feel like waxing nostalgic about one of my favourite SNES games while growing up...

When I was younger, I usually just rented games; so for the longest time, I only owned 3 games for the SNES: Super Mario World (came with the system), Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Uncharted Waters: New Horizons, by Koei. Though the last game might not've been as well known as the others, I played it just as much (if not more!) than the others.

I'm not quite sure what made me buy Uncharted Waters: NH in the first place... The graphics weren't very good even back then, and I recall at least one bad review in a gamer magazine...

But it had PIRATES! And ship-to-ship combat! And sword duels! And hidden treasure! And it was set in the Age of Exploration, when you could still discover new lands, and be rewarded for it! And it was AWESOME.

Much rambling on characters and gameplay, tl;dr )

On a related topic, I was pleased to find that Uncharted waters: New Horizons has been released as Wii ware. :) I guess it was more popular than I realized...

I do have to mention that I'm also disappointed that the sequels to Uncharted Waters were never released overseas (damn you, Koei!) There's even a Japanese MMO, for goodness sakes... >.<

...I take that back. I just found out that there's an English version of Uncharted Waters Online, now. O_O *stares at the pretty trailer*

To cap this (way too long) post off, here's some of the beautiful music from the Uncharted Waters: New Horizons soundtrack, linked to YouTube. (Composer, Yoko Kanno)

Music links behind the cut )

Now if you will excuse me, I'm going to try and remember what the hell happened to my manual for this game (such lovely concept art in it, too). -_-;

So I was looking to re-read a little Haruhi Suzumiya, so I could finish an old 'fic. (I always make a point of re-reading the source material, just to make sure I get something right.)

Much to my dismay, I find out that the translations for the light novel have been taken down, since it's now been licensed... Boo. (Not that I'm not grateful that it's been licensed, but it's still a minor annoyance.)

So instead, I decide to do some Googling on Haruhi; it's been a while since I've done so, after all... I then find out that the "Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" (my favourite storyline in the series), was made into a movie several months ago.

...

HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS?!

This almost makes up for the somewhat half-assed second season... Almost. (Eight episodes of which were the same episode over and over, argh...)

Now, I'm not surprised that they made the Disappearance storyline into a movie; the suspense in the storyline is really well-done, IMO (and for the love of god, do not spoil yourself, if you're a fan of the series!)

Needless to say, I so want to see this now. >.< But all I can find is a subbed camera-rip (which would probably give me motion sickness); not to mention the translated DVD isn't out till December. Gah.

*fidgets impatiently*

Well, since everybody else is doing it... Yep, it's the "Post your Works in Progress meme" again. (Coincidently enough, I've been wanting to post some of my unfinished stuff lately...)

Sadly though, I don't have that many WiPs to post, since I've already posted most of them in the past (and still haven't finished a lot of them, even though it's been years XP). So I decided to post larger sections, to make up for the lack of content.

Fire Emblem: Love Letters in the Saddle )

Fire Emblem 8: Double-edged Sword - Chapter 2 )

Ouran Host Club & Ranma 1/2: Mergers and Acquisitions )

If you're curious to see my full list of WiPs, along with some links to what I've written so far (sigh), you can check this post at my writing journal. (I'm hoping to try to finish some of these stories before the end of year... Well, at least the oneshots. :P)

Having posted my FE Contest entry, I'm now stuck in one of stages I'm usually in after writing something...

Avi's 3 stages of post-writing )

So I'm currently at Stage 2, self-loathing. XP Oddly enough, I still feel like writing at the moment, but nothing Fire Emblem-related (except maybe the Mary Sue challenge, and that isn't due for a while).

Story ideas: Dragon Age, Pokemon, Total Drama )

On the subject of Canadian fandoms, I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. The World a couple of weeks ago. A movie filmed in Toronto that's also set in Toronto? Yeah baby! (I didn't even realize that the movie was based on a Canadian comic, until later... So out of touch with my home country since I moved to the US, sigh.)

Very mild spoilers for Scott Pilgrim )

So yeah, I would recommend Scott Pilgrim to any video gamer, but you would have to keep in mind that the movie is indeed an odd mix of half indy-teen-romantic-comedy, and half video game hijinx. Still enjoyable, for what it's worth. ;)

This is my entry for the [livejournal.com profile] fe_contest challenge, "Flying through the rainbow sky." It's an FE7 story about Lloyd, with Linus thrown in for good measure. I hope I integrated the theme okay... (BTW, the song that this fanfic is named after has nothing to do with the story. ;P)

Still, I'm kind of happy I finished writing this in one sitting, though it may not have turned out exactly the way I first envisioned it. (And excuse the out-of-place use of Norse mythology, but it was the first idea that came to mind.)

I didn't even realize the third game was coming out until a few days ago, but as soon as I knew, I had to have it. :P

I have to admit, the first two puzzles had me stumped this time. >.> But once I noticed the underlying theme behind them (which was the same theme behind most of the puzzles in the game; very fitting), it became easier.

This game was probably easier than the previous Layton games (or perhaps I'm just used to the series); at any rate, it didn't have the same-annoying-puzzle-just-increased-in-difficulty problem that the second game did.

Spoilers for Prof. Layton & the Unwound Future )

So yeah, my love for logic puzzles will be sated for a while, thanks to Prof. Layton. ^_^ (And even though I've finished the game, I still have the bonus puzzles to work through...)

EDIT: In other news, new Edgeworth game coming out, yay... Hey, at least it's another Ace Attorney game. (Also, I want a full shot of that brief glimpse of Edgeworth removing his jacket from the trailer, plz thx... ;P)

I've just realized that Zevran from Dragon Age reminds me of Sain... Times ten. And with absolutely no shame. (Or discrimination, for that matter, since he'll bonk anyone, if given any sort of encouragement. XD)

I just spent part of the evening unlocking some of the support conversations between Zevran and the other characters... Namely, between him and Wynne, who is the elder healer, and mother-figure of the party.

In case you haven't guessed, yes, he does hit on her, in his own inimitable fashion. (As odd as it sounds, I was still howling with laughter, listening to this. And it also makes fun of how characters in video games usually have the same body type, regardless of age. ;P) It would also explain why Wynne was warning my character away from romancing Zevran...

Hmm, if Zevran is Sain, does that mean Alistair would be Kent, then? (Though Kent would never crack as much wise as Alistair does, Alistair does have the same sense of honour...)

But now that I think about it, Zevran reminds me more of Legault, overall... They're both formerly of a criminal organization, both have similar professions (thief/assassin), have similar... tastes, and regret killing a colleague (both female). Hmmm...

September already? And it got so cold right away, too... (Not that I'm complaining; it's been a hot summer, and I hate heat.)

Anyways... Sorry I haven't been around; been playing a lot of video games lately: Lego Harry Potter (have a weakness for Lego games), Rock Band 2 (again)... But mostly I've been playing Dragon Age for the past month. (I haven't played a Bioware game in years, and since I've stopped playing WoW, I've needed a fantasy RPG fix of some sort. ;P)

tl;dr on Dragon Age - Romances & names )

In other news, I've decided to write something serious for the [livejournal.com profile] fe_contest challenge this month. ;P (Me, serious? With that prompt? Yep.) I was hoping to write something other than FE7, but I've already typed up the outline, so we'll see how well that goes...

So, OneManga is going down for good, huh... I'm guessing that it's just a matter of time before MangaFox is gone too. :/ (I use MangaFox more, but it's terrible for ads; OneManga seemed to be better in that regard.)

Still, I was kind of expecting this... And because of that, I've been on a manga reading spree lately. ;P

So, in tribute to one of the best manga reader sites on the 'Net, I'm posting a few of my recent picks in terms of manga. Enjoy them while they last... (You've only got a week!)

(BTW, I'm just going to post reviews, not summaries; you can check those on the site.)

The World Only God Knows )

1/2 Prince )

Oishii Kankei, Bambino! )

Ten no Ryuu Chi no Sakura )

Ice Revolution )

These are just a few of my recent manga picks; there's a lot of better known ones I read too, like Detective Conan and Skip Beat. I just thought that some of these lesser known manga should get some attention before OneManga goes down for good. ;_;

I probably won't be participating in the [livejournal.com profile] fe_contest "Vision" challenge, but I did type out my outline for the Mary Sue one today; I plan on writing the typical Mary Sue FE7 tactician 'fic, but a bit of a twist... I hope. (I won't go into details, since I don't want to spoil it.) Hopefully my story idea still counts as a Mary Sue...

(I'm still disappointed that I missed some of the earlier FE Contest challenges due to my computer needing repair; namely, the "Temper" and "Yield" challenges. Those might've given me the incentive to finish a couple of old story ideas, like the second chapter of my Carlyle 'fic for the former, and the Kent/Sain 'fic I'd been considering for forever, for the latter. Ah, well.)

On a related note, I've decided to play through FE6 finally. (I had started playing FE11 originally, since the new game is coming out, but killing off characters for the Gaiden chapters seems counterintuitive for an FE game. XP)

Anyways, I finished Chapter 8 of FE6 last night, and wow... Am I reminded how bad I am at Fire Emblem games. XP On the bright side, I'm getting more supports than I ever did on FE7 (which was like, practically none).

My FE6 team, supports and musings )

Now, off to play that FE6 Gaiden chapter. :P (Probably.)

The beta for the latest WoW expansion, Cataclysm, has just come out, along with a lot of new information... Including the emotes for the new races, the Goblins and the Worgen. :D

With their Brooklyn accents, I find that the goblin males remind me of Danny Devito, while the females sound like Janine from the Ghostbusters cartoon (which I've actually torrented recently, so I'm pretty sure about the comparison ;P).

As for the Worgen (aka the new werewolf race)... Is it wrong that I find both voices sexy? They both have English accents, which I am a sucker for (and even though the Brit players have been complaining that the female's accent sounds fake, I'm still loving her voice >.>).

As for the emotes themselves (some of which are NSFW, BTW)... While the goblins' jokes and flirts mostly revolve around profits and explosions, I can't help but love the worgen's jokes more... Particularly the female's bacon emote, as well as the digs at Twilight and furries. XD

Whew, finished my FE contest piece. It's an FE8 one, about Natasha/Joshua (had a hard time finishing it, since I don't care for Natasha :/).

Hopefully I'll have time to post on FE contest it before I leave (which is soon!); I'd rather have some time to look it over, rather than post it cold...

EDIT 06/28/10: Changed the title; original title was too wordy. ;)

Went to see Toy Story 3 today. Overall, it was a worthy sequel/tribute to the first two movies (although, I would have to say the second is still my fave). My favourite parts of the movie include Buzz Lightyear en Espanol and the large stuffed (if silent) Totoro. WANT.

However, I was caught off guard by the trailers they showed before the movie (most of which I had heard nothing about until now): the third Narnia installment, "Voyage of the Dawn Treader"; the Smurfs movie (CGI Smurfs in New York *shudder*); and Disney's CGI Rapunzel movie, which is now called "Tangled".

Now, the one that interested me the most was the Rapunzel movie; I had heard about it a while back, while it was still called "Rapunzel". The fact that they changed the name worries me a tad (although the new title is reminiscent of Disney's "Enchanted", which I enjoyed).

Like "Enchanted", "Tangled" seems to be going for the comedic route; other notable alterations include turning the prince into a thief instead, and that Rapunzel appears to use her hair as extensions of herself (as weapons, to swing from, etc.).

My initial reaction to the trailer was mixed, but I'll wait and see... I really liked "Princess and the Frog", but since this is Disney's first foray into CGI + fairy tale, I can't help but compare it to Shrek (and going the comedic route doesn't help that :/). Still, ever since Pixar has been charge of Disney's animation studio, I've liked everything they've put out... So, I'll stay cautiously optomistic about "Tangled". ;)

In other news, I want/need to finish my FE contest entry, but I can't quite do it. XP (Doesn't help that I'm writing about a pairing that I'm fairly blase about; plus, the computer room is uncomfortably warm to type in lately, bleah.)

So... I ended up saving a bird yesterday.

Let me explain... We tend to have a lot of birds in our backyard, since we have farm fields behind our yard (we even have birds nesting in our barbecue, right now XP). And beside our house, there is a 5-foot deep pit that connects to a large window in our basement.

tl;dr about my good deed of the day )

So, to make a long story short, I saved a bird. ;P (Mind you, this isn't the first time I've saved an animal from that pit,* nor the first time I saved a bird trapped in my house.** True story.)

* Once, while mowing the lawn, the SO scared some baby bunnies into our pit, as well as the neighbour's; being the soft touch that I am, I carefully scooped them all into a box, and released them into the field behind our house.

** Back at my parent's house, a bird ended up in our dryer once; seriously, it flew up into the dryer vent from outside. After it being stuck in there all day, we finally thought of unhooking the connecting hose so it could fly out; once it did, I opened the door to the garage, then opened the garage door to let it outside (fortunately, our laundry room had a door to the garage).

Sorry I haven't been around; haven't had too many opportunities to be online lately... I also haven't felt like writing as of late, so I've been finishing various games in hopes of inspiring myself. :P

Anyways, I finished playing Pokemon Soul Silver a while back, and was reminded how much I enjoyed the original game. :) It almost makes me want to finish Platinum (although the reason I liked SS so much is because it's so much simpler than the newer Pokemon games >.>).

Also finished up the Ace Attorney series recently; finally played the last case of the first Phoenix Wright game, played through Trials and Tribulations, then Apollo Justice (not to mention finished the Edgeworth game a while back).

Mild Ace Attorney series spoilers )

In other gaming news, I hear there's a remake of FE3 coming out; ironic, since I was thinking of trying out FE11 again (as you might of noticed, I've been on a game finishing streak lately ;P).

Unfortunately, all this gaming still hasn't inspired me to write... Bah. XP (There's a few short stories that I want to finish off, but in my uninspired state, I'm afraid I'll rush and half-ass it >.>). I've written down the outline for one original story idea recently (although original story ideas for me usually mean a rewrite of an existing fairy tale or the like :/).

Anyways, I'm off to a relative's wedding this weekend; maybe I'll feel like writing more after that... Also, I need to remind myself about the pile of cat photos I've been meaning to post; the two visitor kitties have been back with their owner for a while now, but their pictures (and shed fur) still remain. ;)
