So... I ended up saving a bird yesterday.

Let me explain... We tend to have a lot of birds in our backyard, since we have farm fields behind our yard (we even have birds nesting in our barbecue, right now XP). And beside our house, there is a 5-foot deep pit that connects to a large window in our basement.

Anyways, yesterday in the late afternoon, I start hearing bird noises coming from the the basement. Worried that a bird got in the house somehow, I go check it out and...

You guessed it. There was a bird trapped in the pit to the basement. :/ Now, there is a grille with 2-inch slats covering the pit from above, but the bird must've been just small enough to slip through.

Unfortunately, the bird couldn't fly out of the pit; it could only fly up about 3 feet, tops. (At first, this made me think it was just a fledgling, but after seeing a distressed male robin perched nearby, I figured that the trapped bird might be its mate.)

I wanted to help the bird out, but the SO was worried about opening the window (even though I was pretty sure that if it couldn't fly out the pit, it couldn't get out the window). So he suggested putting down a long board down to the pit, so the bird could hop out.

So I went outside, removed the grille, and put down the board. However, the slope was still too steep for the bird. So I said "F this", went back inside, put on my gardening gloves, carefully crawled in through the window, scooped up the bird after a couple of tries (it was not happy, nor was its mate; I was half worried I'd get swooped at) and then lightly tossed it out of the pit.

So, to make a long story short, I saved a bird. ;P (Mind you, this isn't the first time I've saved an animal from that pit,* nor the first time I saved a bird trapped in my house.** True story.)

* Once, while mowing the lawn, the SO scared some baby bunnies into our pit, as well as the neighbour's; being the soft touch that I am, I carefully scooped them all into a box, and released them into the field behind our house.

** Back at my parent's house, a bird ended up in our dryer once; seriously, it flew up into the dryer vent from outside. After it being stuck in there all day, we finally thought of unhooking the connecting hose so it could fly out; once it did, I opened the door to the garage, then opened the garage door to let it outside (fortunately, our laundry room had a door to the garage).
