So, OneManga is going down for good, huh... I'm guessing that it's just a matter of time before MangaFox is gone too. :/ (I use MangaFox more, but it's terrible for ads; OneManga seemed to be better in that regard.)
Still, I was kind of expecting this... And because of that, I've been on a manga reading spree lately. ;P
So, in tribute to one of the best manga reader sites on the 'Net, I'm posting a few of my recent picks in terms of manga. Enjoy them while they last... (You've only got a week!)
(BTW, I'm just going to post reviews, not summaries; you can check those on the site.)
The World Only God Knows
Normally, I don't care for harem manga (with a few exceptions), but this is more of a parody of a harem manga, in the vein of Ouran HS Host Club.
I do like that the protagonist isn't your typical hot-headed, perverted male lead; he's an anti-social, calculating nerd who doesn't care for real girls, and is instead obsessed with the "perfect" girls from dating sims. (You already knew I had a thing for obsessive nerds, right? ;P)
Initially, the description for this manga didn't catch my eye, but after reading it, it reeled me in... I also like that the girls the male lead "captures" don't all actively chase him around (they conveniently "forget" about it... Sort of).
I'll definitely be looking forward for the anime version of this manga (coming out soon)!
1/2 Prince
This is actually a Chinese manhua(comic), about an MMO set in the future. The MMO part was enough to get me to read it, and it does actually read like someone who plays MMOs wrote it.
Right off the bat, the manga addresses the whole girl gamer cliche (girls can only play casters or healers, never a warrior tank) and turns it on its head. ;)
The main character is a girl who plays a male character, and the only player in the game who plays the opposite sex (which I find hard to believe, since guys play as girls all the time). Still, I can relate, since my mains in WoW have all been male (and you really do get hit on more as a female :P).
Anyways, Prince and her party of so-called misfits, the "Odd Squad", may seem overpowered at times, but if you play any sort of MMO (or like fantasy RPGs), you might enjoy reading this; it does poke fun at the genre a lot. (And there are a lot of hot girls and bishies, if you like that sort of thing, too. ;P)
Oishii Kankei / Bambino!
I'm comparing these two manga because they're both about cooking in a restaurant, yet both are written in different styles; that's because the former is a josei manga (manga aimed at women), and the latter is a seinen manga (manga for men).
The leads in both manga are training to be chefs in a restaurant, but whereas the lead in Oishii Kankei is a former rich girl, who has exceptional taste, but no cooking talent; the male lead in Bambino! is a brash, budding chef from nowhere, who gets a a chance to work in a top Italian restaurant in the city... It's a an interesting contrast.
The focus for both manga slightly differ too: whereas Oishii Kankei (translates to "A Delicious Relationship", BTW) focuses on the lead's unrequited love for a cold, if talented chef, Bambino! focuses on the lead trying to impress a hardass chef with his skill (and being a seinen manga, Bambino! can be quite violent, as well).
I also have to say that the romantic relationships in both manga come off as realistic, as well; not idealized like in most manga. I'd recommend either if you like cooking manga, or a somewhat realistic read (choose based on whether you like shoujo or shonen manga, or just read both ;).
Ten no Ryuu Chi no Sakura
This was one of the spotlight manga on MangaFox a few weeks ago, and the thing that caught my eye about it was that it mentioned rhythmic gymnastics. Sadly, there isn't that much gymnastics in it, but I still found it an entertaining read.
I'd describe this as a school life manga, with supernatural fantasy elements thrown in... And I found the twists in the story to be interesting enough to keep reading.
I almost expected this to be a reverse harem manga, what with the multiple bishonen (although, now that I think about it, there are an equal amount of females, as well), but really, there is only one obvious love interest for the main heroine (two if you include the rival, but even he's forced into the role).
My only real complaint is that there is perhaps one chapter left to go, and it hasn't been translated yet, argh... XP
Ice Revolution
This is up here because I'm a sucker for ice skating manga. XP I actually haven't read it in a while, so no in-depth description; but I liked it better than most ice skating manga I've read, like Ginban Kaleidascope or The Cherry Project... (Maybe it's because it started off as a seinin manga?) Also, this is another one of those manga that hasn't been updated in forever. :/
These are just a few of my recent manga picks; there's a lot of better known ones I read too, like Detective Conan and Skip Beat. I just thought that some of these lesser known manga should get some attention before OneManga goes down for good. ;_;

no subject
These are my suggestions which I peddle to everyone ;0;
Immortal Regis
This is a Korean manhwa. It starts a little generically, in art and story. World-hopping fantasy bit, but it really evolves as it gets rolling. The art gets even better and is one of, if not /the/ favorite of mine, though it gets a little bit more fanservice-y (but not too bad). please give it a chance to get going if you start it, because it and it's sequel are probably my favorites ever. x3
Cavalier of the Abyss
This is the sequel where it really kicks it up and gets more complex and awesome. Still going, updates erratically. And actually, the old translators have disbanded and passed the project off to a group called "Dredshi"
In regards to both of them: The story isn't one that "babies" you. There are probably places of contrived dialogue, things meant to teach you about the world. But overall, it kicks you off a cliff and leaves you to fend for yourself. You learn about the world as you go and there will definitely be places where the characters are talking about something you won't get the first time, but I really like that. It's like it treats you more maturely than most other manga.
