There's a Kyo Kara Maoh OVA series? *squees*
I've consider this anime one of my guilty pleasures (along with Ouran High School Host Club). Besides, how can you not love an anime where the hero first gets sucked into another world through the toilet? XD
I've always enjoyed KKM because it takes several anime conventions, and turns it on its head: It's a magical girl/reverse harem anime, but with a hero instead of a heroine surrounded by bishonen (and there's actually a good explanation for this). It's also a medieval fantasy, but the hero is initially feared because he's a demon king; he even gets a "demonic" sword! And it pokes fun at all the shonen-ai conventions, without being very shonen-ai itself; it's played mostly for laughs, like a romantic comedy would.
The only thing I don't really like about KKM is sadly, the fandom... Too many rabid Wolfram fangirls. :/ I find Wolfram rather... Shrill, myself. He reminds me of Akane Tendo from Ranma 1/2, only even more jealousy-prone, and without her redeeming qualities... Or maybe it's just me. :P I have the distinct impression that if he was a girl and not a bishonen, the fangirls would despise him for being Yuri's fiance...
Which leads to my second gripe... The lack of Conrad/Yuri shipping out there. :/ Now, I adore Conrad, who is arguably perfect... Too perfect. He's the best swordsman in the land, an affectionate big brother figure to Yuri, not to mention he is utterly devoted to Yuri, as the king (which probably explains why I like the pairing so much ;). And I love their pairing because it is the one that the whole series is based upon... (Highlight for spoilers:)
You see, Yuri is the reincarnation of the previous heir to the throne, Julia, who died before she ascended to the throne. Julia was almost Mary Sue-ish in her perfection: beautiful, selfless and blind, she died when she overextended her healing abilities in the war.
But that isn't the only tragic thing about her... She was in love with Conrad, and he with her... But she was engaged to someone else. Now, of course, they never acted on these feelings (although it was plainly obvious to everyone else around them XP), and when she died, Conrad was given her soul to place into the next heir, who was a baby at the time... Namely, Yuri.
This is why I love the pairing so much. :) Yet another anime convention turned on its head (the placing of Conrad's beloved's soul into an ordinary, typical boy, instead of a girl).
The only problem with Conrad/Yuri is that, well... Yuri is already engaged, to Wolfram (who incidently, is Conrad's younger brother), making the pairing even more unlikely (and making my inner lord or lady/knight fangirl go arrrrgh DX). I won't even go into how rabid the Wolfram/Yuri fangirls are... XP Obviously, I prefer Conrad/Yuri's comraderie over Wolfram yelling at Yuri for being a wimp all the time.
At any rate, this is getting kind of long, so... I will say that I really like what I've seen of the KKM OVA so far. Those who've seen and liked the original series should enjoy it (plus, it's a teaser to yet another season, woo!) My only gripe is that the episodes are kind of aired out of order... Still, looking forward to seeing more! :D
