OMG, I can't believe Avatar is over... Despite the somewhat mediocre first half of the season, the series finale definitely made up for it. Easily one of the best Western animated series ever made, in terms of animation, action and creativity.
Kudos to Aang for finding his own path to defeating Ozai. Even though I knew what would happen, the fact that they set up Aang (and the audience) to believe that he would kill Ozai, made it more satisfying when he didn't. (Also, "Phoenix Lord" Ozai reminded me of Kael'thas Sunstrider from World of Warcraft, another villain with megalomanical tendencies...)
As usual, the Avatar finale had its usual blend of action and comedy (although I found the GAang rubbing in their triumph towards Ozai somewhat cringeworthy, though typical). I did find the talk between the Fire Nation grunts as they were tricked into the bomb bay of the zeppelin incredibly amusing, though; I actually felt sorry for them as they got chucked into the water. "I can't believe the captain remembered my birthday!"
In terms of action, the showdown between Zuko and Azula in particular reminded me of something out of Hero (the Jet Li movie)... Also, it's nice to see old guys kicking arse for a change, as the White Lotus Society retook Ba Sing Se (you get so used to seeing kids and teenagers saving the world, in anime and cartoons ;). And as some people have pointed out elsewhere, the background music is excellent throughout; unique from the usual BGM, yet absolutely appropriate.
Azula's descent into paranoid insanity is on par with Light Yagami's in the final episode of Death Note, I think. O_o Holy crap, did she snap at the end, there... I do have to kind of boo at the creators for leaving us on a cliffhanger, though; they better tell us what happened to Zuko's mom, somehow. :P
Still, all in all, a pretty awesome ending to an awesome series. Pity Aang's adventures seem to be over (although the creators might continue with a series from the same universe...)
